Description of Work Unit

The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences is focused on education, research, and outreach to solve the world’s most pressing food production issues and crucial matters about Earth, its ecosystems, and their services. Our faculty and staff apply research-based solutions to benefit Colorado and the world. We offer academic programs to prepare students to address national and global crop production, sustainability, and environmental quality challenges such as waste management, water quality, and reclamation of drastically disturbed lands. There are numerous opportunities for individuals to be involved in cutting edge research related to global food production and ecosystem function and protection.

Position Summary

The person filling this position would assist personnel in the Crops Testing Program with field trail work based out of Akron, CO. Responsibilities may include: taking trial field-notes with a team member throughout the growing season (such as plant counts, plant height measurements, and other field notes), assist with plot maintenance (putting out stakes, hoeing weeds, etc), data entry, assist with oilseed crop harvest (camelina), and help with post-harvest grain sample analyses such as protein and seed size counts.The person would have an opportunity to assist with extension/outreach events such as wheat field days.

Position Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18+ years of age

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include: some heavy lifting (up to 40 lb), and will require manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and handling.

  • Ability to drive a CSU vehicle with a valid driver’s license

  • Ability to work in environmental conditions including exposure to weather and noise. Hazards include: working in proximity to moving, mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals used in weed/pest control and fertilization. Worker Protection Standard training will be provided at the beginning of the season.

  • Ability to accommodate Flexible Work Arrangements ( FWA ) and to meet seasonal demands as well as varied work hours.
